2022.01.26 14:03 AceBuilder1109 How do I deal with hyper-conservative people?

I can't stand it anymore. I live in an area where everyone is a hyper-conservative redneck that believes the US is the best country ever. That "people died for our freedom". Like, no people died so US oil companies didn't lose too much profit. And what freedom? The freedom to choose between 62 types of shampoo? Real freedom is the freedom to quit a job you hate or one that abuses you without worrying about health insurance or your entire livelihood. But they're so stubborn. They can't believe that their worldview might be wrong. And I can't deal with it anymore. And the worst part is that the only college with the major I want is Plattsburgh NY, and from what I've heard, that area is no better. And it's pretty much too late to switch colleges, because Plattsburgh has already offered me a good amount of financial aid.
So, as a hardcore socialist/anticapitalist how do I deal with hyper-conservative people for the next five years?

2022.01.26 14:03 reluctant344 Medicare Advantage telemarketers and dementia shenanigans

My father is nearing 90 with dementia and lives in a graduated care retirement community village in his own independent home (for now). We have a Home Health nurse who visits his home weekly and manages his medications, all paid by regular medicare. This set up is super convenient as the nurse is on site and a medicare paid doctor visits the village weekly for residents of the community who need appointments. He also has a solid medicare supplemental plan and tricare for life. All good until a few weeks ago when we were informed by the Home Health service that our father’s medicare had been switched from “regular” to a “medicare advantage” program and their services (and the village doctor’s) were no longer covered as of 1/1/22. We reviewed his nanny cams and discovered that sometime in early December 2021 during a break in the day when he had no caregiver, he received a call from this Medicare Advantage company. My father has trouble speaking and anyone can tell something is obviously wrong with him ,but after a long (LOOONG) struggle was able to give this caller his medicare number. Viola…he was switched. No papers to sign, nothing. Just a call. Thankfully, after 3 hours of stressful conference calls we were able to reversed this and Feb 1 he will be back to regular medicare. My question: Is this verbal switch standard practice? Is it even legal? My husband just switched his medicare advantage program, and he had to sign papers digitally.

2022.01.26 14:03 avatar_0 Ukraine-Russia Escalation, Sources beyond Hasan

I saw a lot of people thinking Hasan was wrong on Ukraine and I wanted to provide some resources so people could get a better understanding. IMO Hasan didn't talk enough about the Minsk deal or Nordstream 2 role (please read the first article I linked) in this recent escalation but on the other end I saw people completely buying NATO propaganda. If you read some of the sources you'll understand but TLDR full invasion is unlikely and US has played a bigger role in this recent surge than most of the media you guys have been seeing has told you
Russia-US escalation: How did we get here? Talks about how Ukraine asking for more USA involvement has increased tensions and led to USA taking a leading role (perhaps too far as Ukraine didn't like withdrawl of personal). Has analysis on Nordstream 2, pointing out that if Russia really wanted to invade why not wait for the certification of this gas pipeline to Germany that avoids going through Ukraine.
Ukraine: The Most Dangerous Problem in the World. Talks about how the Minsk deal could be a solution and potentially what USA should do. Also quite a bit of background, great read. Chomsky recommended this too, see interview
The hidden origin of the escalating Ukraine-Russia conflict
This is all the backdrop though, it’s an evolving situation and ultimately I don't know what will happen and I don’t think it’s possible to either. I think the worst escalation that could happen is Russia occupying the Donbas region, hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
Just thought I could provide some more context/info. Just because USA is pushing further than some other people expected (like France, Croatia, Germany and to a lesser extent Ukraine) doesn’t mean Russia is the “good guy” they are still an imperialist power ultimately. They are supporting troops in Donbas, the region in Eastern Ukraine w/ two separatist republics, to fight a proxy war with Ukraine killing 13k people. The American media is creating a storm, but a full invasion is
Theres obv more than what I’ve linked but here are some resources:
Center for Defense Strategies: How likely is large-scale war in Ukraine? (analysis) (Ukraine Military Think Tank, says full invasion unlikely but remained prepared and there likely will be military escalation)
Stop Panicking About Ukraine—and Putin

2022.01.26 14:03 tomissmelly Just looking for anyone else’s experience with MVD related issues

Chiweenie with MVD, looking for advice. I posted on a vet subreddit, but I know heaps of people have similar issues with chihuahuas so was hoping anyone could offer words of experience or wisdom on the issue. She’s my first dog!
I have a 6 year old female chiweenie, living in the UK.
She was diagnosed with MVD in October 2020, her most recent heart scan in December saw an enlargement of 1.6 to 1.8 within 6-7 months. Her heart murmur is stage 4. She’s on 1.25mg Vetmedin twice daily. I give it to her at 9:30-10 for 12 hour doses
Now, she was grain free Lilly’s kitchen food and I blamed myself that the grain free food is what caused it. However, the vet did say it was natural progression. But I considered it quite fast?? I have now swapped her to ancient grains Lilly’s kitchen, she also gets a heart health supplement crushed over her food, probiotics and a pump of salmon oil. She is a perfect weight as well.
Now she’s really active but also loves a good sleep in. Her resting breath rate has not increased at all, but also her heart was enlarging and this still didn’t increase?? The only symptom she shows is coughing after running fast - BUT this stopped after a week or two on Vetmedin but the last week I have noticed it has come back. But it’s mainly when she is rough and tumbling with my other dog. The cough is very much like a heave and it’s only once. She continues running after this but stops to do the cough.
Is there anything else I can do? Is this cough showing the medication isn’t working? Her next heart scan is first week of March, should I make it earlier? And was the progression considered fast over 6 month period?
Sorry to ask here, my vet is struggling with staff shortages and i don’t want to make their load bigger if unnecessary
She is literally my soulmate, my heart dog. And anything I could do for her I would.

2022.01.26 14:03 oridol Bookish Social Media's Influence on Me

As a student, an avid reader, and quite frankly, a Gen Z-er, social media has a gravitational pull and huge influence on my life. It helps me keep up with friends that I've moved away from, allows me to keep up with authors that I adore, and has helped me find some of my favourite books of all time. However, even with efforts to minimize my presence on platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, Goodreads, and YouTube, I find that influence, especially from the book niche, still finds me.
While it isn't always negative, sometimes I have to catch myself before buying a book, or putting a book on my TBR. Am I really interested in this book? Or is just everyone else on the internet reading it? It seems that for my age group, they only seem interested in reading fantasy, or romcom. And, those are perfectly viable options, but not genres that typically interest me. Move up just above my age group, to those in their 20s, and it's typically poetry, or classics. While this is usually a little more my speed, their consumption rate that appears through their consistency of posting does influence how I think about my own reading speed, and comprehension of what I'm reading.
I used to think, naively, that I had to enjoy these books that everyone else on the internet was seemingly enjoying. But unfortunately, I'm just not into romcom, and I don't think poetry will ever truly be my thing. I don't think I'll ever be the girl who annotates her books and reads them twice over, or the girl who takes the most pretty pictures of what she's reading. I don't think I'll be the person who doesn't bend the spine, dog ear the page, or doesn't get rid of a single book ever to have this huge library of books.
I've been on these platforms for years, and I'm just now un-conditioning myself from believing these things. Do you have a similar experience with being influenced by social media in your reading habits? What books have you picked up because everyone else seems to be enjoying it, even if you knew that wasn't your preferred genre? What has bookish social media taught you, positively? I'm genuinely interested, as someone who will continue to use Goodreads, and Instagram, to document my books as I read throughout the year, and who will try to be more conscientious about how influencers are influencing me.
